This portrait was photographed at the Rittenhouse hotel in Philadelphia, PA.
This picture was taken during the individual portraits of the groom on the wedding day. Josh is seen here standing in the library area of the hotel. He liked this environment and I always try to use a backdrop that my subject matter enjoys when I'm photographing them. It's an extension of who they are. I thought the moody feel to the scene worked well with some more dramatic lighting and the black and white edit felt timeless and classic.
They were not windows in this part of the hotel, and the existing light was coming from too far above, so I decided to use a soft box on Josh off camera left. When I light my subject, I try not to make it look too set up and I wanted it to blend in with the environment.
